Just realised last post was October when it was warm and sunny and I was predicted a cold snap. It seems I was right but now it is warm and sunny once more perhaps this is another warning before the artic weather resumes. The feeding and bedding sales are strong at the moment but bedding is getting scarce as is forage. Coming to a close of another month with the clocks going back this weekend. It may well be a very warm and sunny day here in Leeds but I think winter is just around the corner.
We also have Bonfire night approaching with all the implications of that occasion for the owners of cats and dogs and of course horses so do take extra care when riding etc.

Nothing is set in stone about what to use and when with regard to worming your horse. One general principle is to annually rotate the active ingredients in the grazing season this is one of many thoughts on ways to reduce resistance building up. When you do this you must remember that there are many products with different brand names that contain the same active ingredient. There are combination products that are targeting more than one parasite but even those differing brands using the same ingredients still need to be used differently particularly when it come to treating breeding stock and foals. Also remember when treating donkeys for worm burden different issues are involved and only a limited amount of products can be used on donkeys so you need a special approach if treating mixed horse and donkeys.
Certain products are recommended for use at specific times of the year but again this is not a must as what we are trying to disrupt is the life cycle of the worms and our seasonal temperatures and conditions are ever changing in the UK.
Different products have different dosage intervals all of which are marked on the packaging so you will have to take that into account when you are working out your seasonal worming plan. Also during the future there may be other factors involved such as moving paddocks, age, pregnancy and such like all of which will need to be factored in any animal management plan. There are also occasions when worm count can be taken to ascertain parasite levels.

Climate change and equine worming.
Climate changes have had an effect on pasture contamination. Although harsh frosts (and hot dry conditions) will kill infective larvae on the pasture, the milder and wetter climate now experienced in the UK has meant high levels of infective larvae can occur on the pasture at any time of year. Thus there is an increased likelihood of grazing animals acquiring parasite burdens throughout the year. Therefore if the autumn and winter remain mild and wet we will need to be more vigilant all year round. Only harrow in very dry conditions, as in damp conditions harrowing simply spreads worm eggs and larvae over the pasture and so increasing the risk of being ingested by horses.

Pinworm burden is becoming an increasing problem for UK horse owners. Pinworm (Oxyuris equi) is not generally thought to be harmful but more of a nuisance and an irritant. However it is becoming more difficult to eliminate. The female can grow up to approximately 10cm in length and are white in colour. They reside in the large intestine and attach them selves to the intestinal wall to ingest the contents for food.
Adults produce eggs approximately 5 months after the initial infection which are found on the pasture, in faeces, contaminated water fences and walls.
Eggs are ingested by the horse and L3 larvae are released in the small intestine, they then migrate to the large intestine to develop into the mucosa to L4 larvae which then emerge and mature into adults. The female adults then migrate from the large intestine to the anus where they lay eggs in clumps on the perineal skin causing irritation around the anus leading to tail rubbing. These can be removed on a daily basis by cleansing the of the tail, anus and hindquarters with warm diluted disinfectant.
Active ingredients that treat for adult and pinworm larvae are Moxidectin, Ivermectin, Febendazole and Mebendazole although not all brands are licensed so care needs to be taken by checking the brand’s label.

Extra care should be taken in the stable environment to help reduce the risk of re-contamination from buckets, feed bowls, haynets and rugs etc. Do not share grooming brushes. A thorough clean with a heavy duty disinfectant in these areas and most importantly the stable after removing all bedding will help and is always a good idea in areas of animal care and management.

In some circumstances it may be possible for your vet to prescribe special preparations or treatments.

Bardsey Mills Ltd have been in the horse feed business for many years now and this weeks Cheltenham Festival brings back happy memories from 1983. That was the year that Michael Dickinson trained the first five finishers in National Hunt's premier steeplechase. Dickinson was just 33 at the time and in only his third season as a trainer at Dunkeswick near Harewood in Yorkshire. Our mill at the time was nearby in Harrogate and we were the sole providers of feed for all the horses trained at that yard including the star cast that took the honours that day. What a shame I did not have a bet. Expectant news
My colleague Kelly Marie Rothery the manager of Bardsey Mills Ltd and wormers-direct.co.uk has gone on maternity leave as she expecting a special delivery on June 21st. I think she may be away for more than a short while so until her return we will be a little short staffed and during that time all your worming enquiries and orders will be handled by me Simon Wetherald the MD. Kelly will be surely missed but I think we can let her have some time off for the forthcoming event. I will be here 5 ½ days a week but there may be some occasions when I will not be able to deal with your queries as quickly as we would normally like to do so. My other colleagues will be available to take your calls etc but when it comes to the prescription products they will have to defer to me as Kelly and I are the only suitably qualified personnel here.

Basically snowed on and off all week here in Leeds and bitterly cold at night. Makes delivering horse feeeds a bit tricky on the country lanes and stable yards but we will allways manage.
Plenty of outdoor rugs sold this week and gloves too. Horse wormers sales a bit steady at the moment as people wait for a weather change perhaps.
Had a small video made last week which will be for our websites and newsletters. If I can do so i will pop it on the blog

Quite a warm day today but still good for selling feed. The economy seems pear shaped so in response I see our local council are looking at putting up the rates?? Today have been looking at how the soil association view worming horses on organic land and I have managed to learn something there.
Spent an hour today with what one might describe as a business guru, he came across very well but whether I shall go for a couple of days instruction in stategic planning remains to be seen

The sun is shining and the telephone is red hot today but where are all my calling customers today, so far we have not seen to many. Best selling product today in the shop are things to combat mud fever closley followed by conditioning cubes.
Shavings supplies as ever is a nightmare but we have not run out quite yet

Supplier nightmare

Business quite good but why are some suppliers so. useless? If we had a better supply chain with suppliers actually capable of returning phone calls then things would be easier. Fortunately our horse and pet wormer suppliers are on the ball.
Geting horse bedding is the usual night mare but Bedmax is trickling in and Hemcore is available from our Leeds feedshop.
Best seller of the week so far is Equest Horse wormer with Spillers Horse and Pony nuts a close second
